A four-letter personality test
Personality
Thirty-six questions on a seven-point scale. If two types are genuinely close for you, we say so instead of guessing.
Question
is in you too.
ISTJ
The Backbone
You said you would have it done by Thursday and it has been done since Tuesday, quietly, without a status update. Someone else's deadline slips and you feel it almost physically, like a chair leg that will not sit flat.
You are at your best when the plan is followed, the work is solid, and nobody had to chase anyone.
You come undone when the rules change halfway through for reasons nobody bothered to explain.
- Shows up on time
- Reads the manual first
- Deeply distrusts shortcuts
- Keeps the receipts
- Quietly does the most
What you are good at
You do what you said you would do, and you have done it for so long that the people around you have quietly built their lives on top of that. They do not thank you for it because they have stopped noticing it, the way nobody thanks a floor.
You catch the error. The number that does not reconcile, the clause that contradicts the other clause, the date that cannot be right: you find it because you actually read the thing, which almost nobody else did.
And you are steady in the week where everything goes wrong. While other people are having reactions you are working out the order of operations, and the crisis gets smaller mainly because you refused to make it larger.
What gets in your way
You hold everybody to a standard you never announced. It is obvious to you and invisible to them, and they keep failing a test they were not told they were sitting, and you keep concluding things about their character.
You resist a change before you have finished hearing it. Some of that instinct is earned, because you have watched a great deal of enthusiasm turn into somebody else's cleanup. Some of it is simply that new is uncomfortable and you have dressed the discomfort up as judgement.
And you carry it alone. Asking for help reads to you as an admission, so you absorb more and more until something gives, and the people who would gladly have taken half of it never even knew there was a load.
Close up
You are not going to say it often, and you have decided that is fine because you show it. You do show it: the car got serviced, the form got filed, the thing they mentioned in passing was quietly handled. That is love and you are fluent in it.
The trouble is that the person you love may not read that dialect. They are waiting for the sentence, and you keep sending the deed, and both of you are certain you are being clear.
Say it out loud sometimes anyway. Not because the deeds are insufficient. Because the words cost you almost nothing and they are worth an unreasonable amount to somebody who has been waiting for them.
At work
You are the reason things run. Give you a defined scope and a clear standard and you will hold it for years without supervision, and the organisation will slowly forget how much depends on you.
You are worst under a manager who changes direction weekly and offers no reason. It is not the change. It is being asked to abandon finished work with no account of why, which reads to you as disrespect and often is.
You are promoted late, because you do not campaign. Make a habit of writing down what you actually did each quarter and putting it somewhere visible. It will feel like boasting. It is not, it is correcting an error.
The one thing
Say the standard out loud.
When somebody does it the wrong way, tell them what the right way is and why, at the time, in one sentence. Not a rebuke. The reason. You have been silently marking people for years against a rule nobody ever gave them.
You are not rigid, whatever you have been told. You are consistent, and consistency shared in advance is one of the most generous things there is. Kept private, it only ever reads as disapproval.

These are guesses, and we would rather say so. Not one of these people has sat the official test and published the result. Every celebrity list on the internet, ours included, is fans voting on strangers. Enjoy it as that.
